Are there any cheaper and good alternatives to the pricey Adobe Creative Suite?

Adobe Software
I’m a design student, and I don’t plan to use the said software/s to generate money whatsoever. I need it for school, but I’ve heard that the full creative suite costs around $1000. I know of alternatives, but I need ones that are cheaper but don’t actually sacrifice quality. Open-source ones are also welcome.

It depends what you are actually doing. There are a number of packages in CS, and some of them have good, cheap alternatives available.
If you are doing a course which teaches you how to use Creative Suite, then you are going to struggle if you try to use different software which has different featuresets and interfaces.

GET THE GIMP!
A cheap alternative, free actually, to Adobe Photoshop is the GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program). It looks just like Photohop, check it out.
