When re-sampling images one can use either Bicubic Smoother or Bicubic Sharper. You can use Bicubic smoother for up sampling and Bicubic sharper for down sampling. You can actually specify which interpolation method is to be used by going to general preferences and setting a default.



There are two features for printing. You can use contact sheet II or picture package. Use contact sheet when you want all images in the same size and you want to print the name below the image. Use printer package when you want different image sizes on the same page, or multiple copies of the same image, or a text overlay.



If you want to remove a glare on the eyeglasses of an image you should use a part of the lens that does not have a glare and use it to layer the lens with a glare. Use tools like rotate and skew and soft-tip eraser to soften the edges. Ensure the glare does not show through from below. Or, do some careful work using the clone tool.



The online services enable you to connect to online photo printing and sharing sites.



The Web Photo gallery can generate hyperlink pages that can be uploaded to a server.



The Picture Package option will help you prepare photos in layout with multiple size prints on one page.



You will never forget how you achieved a certain result because the History Log will detail every step taken by you as well as time-tracking, and a legal record. There are three choices wherein, you can create a sessions only record where, it will record only when Photoshop is opened or closed; or a concise record which will record each action including the text that appears in the history palette; or the complete editing history including the text that appears in the actions palette.

Beyond the rather boring element of the operating system itself, I mean who wants to get excited about Windows Vista, software allows you to manage your music, edit your photos, write documents, view the web. It’s everywhere.

So what makes a good software package and what are the ones you should be using to do the task at hand? Here are some suggestions for both PC and Mac users:

Storing and managing photos.

When it comes to storing and managing your photos on your computer there are lots of options both online and offline. Online there are a number of photo services such as Photobox or Kodak’s EasyShare gallery, including the newly launched Adobe Photoshop Express service, and that’s before you start looking at Flickr from Yahoo and Picasa from Google. Offline and one of the best solutions for the PC is Adobe’s Photoshop Elements software. Simple yet effective there is plenty here for the digital photographer. The interface is clean and crisp and there are some really good features like the photo merge option and the flash based web galleries that will make this appeal to lots of people. On the Mac the best option for consumers is Apple’s own iPhoto application. Although you can now get Adobe’s elements for Mac, iPhoto does virtually everything you need including allowing you to make and publish your own book or website.

For Music.

Chances are you have a large music collection and there are two really good music programs for the PC and the Mac to help you manage it. For the PC it’s the incumbent music application; Windows Media Player 10. The software will manage you music, let you connect it to virtually every MP3 player (apart from Apple’s iPod) to transfer songs and also is again virtually guaranteed to work with music subscription services (although again not with Apple’s iTunes) so you can buy tracks or rent tracks online. On the mac there is really only one option, Apple’s iTunes. It allows you to manage your music, is the only player to work with the company’s iconic iPod MP3 player and also allows you to buy video and music through its iTunes store, which has recently become the number one music store in the US.

For the Office.

Like storing and managing your photos, their are a number of solutions on and offline to help you write documents, manage spreadsheets and give presentations. Microsoft’s office for Windows and Mac is very impressive, offers lots of features and will get the job done. The trouble is that it’s also very expensive. If budget is tight, as in non-existent then you can opt for Google’s online offering, which has the benefit of being able to be managed by a number of different workers at the same time. Alternative there is Open Office a free office application that offers a document writer, spreadsheet program and other bits and bobs so you can still write letters of resignation or find out much you’ve got in the bank.

For Surfing.

Although there are plenty of browsers for surfing the web and the market leader is Microsoft’s Windows Internet Explorer you really want to be surfing the Internet using Mozilla’s Firefox. Firefox is an open source browser that allows you to bolt on third party applications it’s the way to surf the web quickly and effectively, and tab browsing, if you aren’t already using it, will revolutionise the way you surf the internet forever.

Without these essential pieces of kit undoubtedly our computer usage would be considerably more difficult.

As an aspiring digital photographer, I’ve always enjoyed uploading my photos to my computer and playing around with them in photo editing software. I’ve found that I can make my good photos even better, and often times I can salvage a boring, hum-drum photo into something that’s really worthwhile. There are a lot of different photo editing software suites out there, from the ultra-basic programs bundled with Microsoft Windows to professional-level software programs running hundreds or even thousands of dollars. Though there are a lot of options, Adobe Photoshop software has become the standard for many photographers, both amateur and professional, for good reason.

Though it’s sometimes tough to keep track of all of the different versions of Adobe Photoshop software (there have been more than ten), all of them share some of the same characteristics. This is especially true after Photoshop 7, since most later generations of the software have focused mainly on fine-tuning the software suite without introducing any major, earth-shattering changes. One of the key aspects of Adobe Photoshop software is that Photoshop makes it quick and easy to take care of most of the common tasks people want their photo editing software to do. Cropping a photo takes a couple seconds, as does adjusting the light levels, brightness, or contrast within a photo. Even my parents, who describe themselves as being inept with computer software on the whole, manage to crop and adjust their photos quickly and easily. They’re also fond of the different filters or effects Photoshop can apply to photos, from lithograph effects to embossing to solarization, almost any visual effect is only a couple clicks away.

Though many other photo editing programs make simple photo manipulation easy, what really sets Adobe Photoshop software apart from other photo editing programs is the ease of using its more advanced features. Selective color allows the user to home in on one particular color range, be it blues, greens, yellows, etc., and adjust its relative intensity. Editing levels, saturation, and even color curves is also a snap, and Photoshop renders the colors of photos so well it’s often nearly impossible to tell that the photo has been altered when comparing shots before and after editing, aside from the fact that the “after” photo is usually sharper, better balanced, and more colorful.

Though Adobe Photoshop software is usually expensive, especially for the most recent version, past versions of the software can usually be tracked down for a reasonable price. Whatever it costs, Photoshop’s cost can be easily justified when looking at the great photos it eventually produces.
