Is there a free program like Adobe After Effects?

I want to work on videos like you can do with After Effects (Adobe), but I find the software very expensive (1200) and I wanted to ask if there is sth similar to it…

    Free alternatives:
    - Wax, a high performance and flexible video compositing and special effects software. Do not expect the same kind of performance or effects, though: you will be disappointed.

    - Blender, though 3d, does offer compositing, non-linear video editing and obviously a wide array of 3d effects/options, such as particle systems, fluids, physics… Arguably you could emulate most effects done in After Effects – for 3d animated effects it is obviously superior, but harder to use. Awesome app, though.

    - ZS4 Video Editor – though not exactly an effects app, it does come with built-in effects. More info at:

    If you are after an amazing compositing/visual effects app, you might want to check out Shake for the Mac. Ridiculously inexpensive ($499) IF you own a Mac. Used in high profile movie productions.

    Jashaka is terrible compared to Afx – nice for home movies. Unfortunately, there is no REAL inexpensive and professional alternative for Afx – except perhaps Shake, depending on what you intend to accomplish. Blender can do amazing stuff as well, but is a very different beast by its very nature. You’d rather want to combine Blender with Afx and/or Shake, but I would say Blender is your best free bet. It is being used for motion graphics.
