What do I need to activate Adobe CS3?

I’m looking to buy Adobe CS3 in the near future (used, of course). What information do I need to activate the product? Only the serial number? ( I read about some “activation code” thing too) I’ve bought used software before online and been burned by missing numbers, activation codes, etc etc. I am poor and can’t afford to get screwed again. So what exactly do I need for CS3? (yes I know that the current version is CS4 but it is disgustingly overpriced)
