What is good software for logo design?

I personally like Macromedia Fireworks for fast logos. It is very easy to pick up various pieces and move them around without clicking on layers. I can bring it into Flash and create some movement – then I can save it as a gif for a moving logo on a website.
Here is an example of a logo I created some while back using Fireworks and Flash:
I created the image of all the computer pieces on the side in Photoshop.
On the other hand, Adobe Illustrator is the pro when you just can’t settle for anything less than the best. Because it is so compatible with Adobe Photoshop, the effects are endless.
The tricky thing is learning to use the pen tool. Once you have that mastered, you need to master how to make lines go under and over each other. It’s best to take a college class if you’ve never worked with this type of software as it can be a bit difficult. A good professor can teach you a lot of shortcuts – well worth the investment if this is your career.

Adobe Illustrator is the BEST program in the world!
I make pretty good money selling designs I make with that program, and i’ve had it only a few months.

The best thing you can do is learn how to use it by watching video tutorials. Its nearly impossible to learn to use the pen tool/bezier curves (most essential part of the program) by reading a book. I learned to use it by simply watching three free video tutorials here :
And the rest comes with practice, lots of practice
Watch the videos over and over, and pause and rewind parts that you dont understand.
You will LOVE this program! I think if you are in college you can get a hige discount on the program, too.

suggest starting with drawing some sketches out for an idea of how to create logo and colors, for purpose,

Working with logos is all fine and dandy but you just need to know if that’s the only thing your going to be using it for. Building a logo is one thing but creating a logo is another.
For instance if you are working with photographs wich someone wants turned into a logo (in part or full) you might want to go with a Raster Graphics package where as if someone wants you to create a text logo you may want to go with a Vector Graphics package. Usually you’ll find that somewhere along the line a log may require a little of both worlds and some forthough should go into it.
Photoshop and Illustrator are two good packages (Raster and Vector respectively) though they do have a limited range of cross image type support (a little vector in Photoshop a little Raster support in illustrator) but it just depends on how complex you need to make it (and usually a logo is only as complex as it needs to be, it’s a logo for petes sake =P )
For simple shapes and colors vector graphics are usually simpeler and easier to manipulate however if you are looking for depth and detail Raster tends to pull it off a little better though it does take some skill to achive it (rather than just dumping on filters till you get a very “stock” looking result)
If your looking for options, usually the big names aren’t nessicarily the best. You can use Flash to Vector a logo but it may take a little more work. You can use a paint program like MSpaint or Gimp or OpenCanvas (V1 because its free)
There aren’t many free Vector packages however if you find one I’m sure it would be worth it.
This isn’t saying that Adobe products aren’t good but usually its cheaper to seek an alternative.

Adobe Illustrator by far and truly is the best. The key is knowing how to use the program. Many people don’t know how to finesse the system. Here is a picture I did real quick with it.
